Mantras that heal

THE NATIONAL Folklore Support Centre (NFSC) is organising a Healing Voices workshop from November 3 to 12, which will be conducted by E. R. Gopalakrishnan, founder of the Yoga Maiam, and former director of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram Institute of Yoga Studies.

The workshop will explore one of the ways of healing the mind — through chanting of Vedic mantras, a form of yoga, which has since time immemorial been considered a profound and practical method that awakens and helps transcend the self. This universal tool that enables spiritual growth called adhyayanam is the art of listening and learning to recite with attention, and complete involvement of head, heart and body.

Healing Voices is being held to explore the possibility of integrating voice training as a means of healing. The NFSC is also concerned about making this tradition accessible to the public and exploring it as an alternative healing method.

Each session will last for an hour and thirty minutes and will be held every evening from 6 to 7.30 p.m at the NFSC office premises at 7, V Cross Street, Rajalakshmi Nagar, Velachery.

The course fee is Rs. 600. Enrolment will be on a first-come-first-serve basis as only 20 participants can be accomodated. For details contact 22450553.
