What it is about…

Lakshmi Shanthi Movies' Mambattiyan is the remake of the old hit Malayur Mambattiyan (1983). The hero of the earlier film was Thiagarajan. It was remade in Hindi as Ganguva with Rajinikanth as the hero and in Telugu with Krishnam Raju and in Kannada with Ambaresh. It was a hit in all the languages. After 28 years, the film is being remade in Tamil with Prasanth as the hero and directed by Thiagarajan, who acted in the original. It is the first time that a film where the lead earlier played by the father is done by his son after so many years with the father directing it. The others in the cast are Meera Jasmine, Vadivel, Prakash Raj, Mumaith Khan, Kotta Srinivasa Rao, Vijayakumar, Manobala, Kalairani and Riyaz Khan. The camera is handled by Shaji Kumar and the music is scored by Thaman S. and edited by Donmax. The audio of the film was released recently. Thiagarajan has taken care of the story, screenplay, dialogue, production and direction.

Producer and director Thiagarajan:

When Malaiyur Mambattiyan was released, it became a hit. I felt if only some changes had been made in the script, the film would have been a bigger success at the box office. So when I decided to do the same film with my son Prasanth as the hero, I incorporated those changes. I feel the film will be a super duper hit.

Hero Prasanth: It is a privilege to work in a film in which my dad played the hero and now directed by him. There are many highpoints in the film — the story, screenplay, cast, location, music and, above all, direction. When we saw the first copy, we were happy that our hard work had been rewarded. We have shot in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. We discovered some half a dozen waterfalls, not featured before in any other film.

Music director Thaman S.: When director Thiagarajan came to me after finishing the shooting of the film, he told me he wanted to retain two of Ilaiyaraja's hit numbers, ‘Chinnaponnu Sela' and ‘Kattuvazhi', and I needed to remix them. I was happy to work on the songs composed for the earlier film by maestro Ilaiyaraja. I have finished the re-recording and can say with pride that Mambattiyan has all the ingredients to make it a blockbuster.

Music highlights

There are six songs in the album with the remixed version of ‘Kattuvazhi' being repeated. One is sung by Naveen and the other by Thiagarajan. ‘Chinnaponnu Sela' is another remix well rendered by Harish Ragavendra and Shaila from Malaysia. Both have been written by Vairamuthu. Music director Thaman has composed three original numbers, which are sure to make an impact. Annamalai has penned the lyrics of ‘Karuppanasamy', rendered well by Ranjith and Priya Hemesh. Rita scores with the song ‘Yedho Aaghudae' written by Na. Muthukumar. ‘Malaiyuru' is another good song by the same lyricist and sung by the music director, Srivardhini, Megha, Janani and Rita.
