Laughing matter

Panchathanthiram(Tamil) Produced by Thenappan P L under the banner of Sri Rajalakshmi Films International, written and directed by K.S.Ravikumar, the film attempts to repeat the fortune that he earned with `Tenali'.

As the name suggests, `Panchathanthiram' is a story of plots and sub plots, folded and unfolded on various occasions. Set in the posh locales of Canada and later in Chennai and Bangalore, the story revolves around Ramchandra Murthy alias Ram CM (Kamal Hassan), a pilot by profession and his four friends _ Nair (Jayaram), Hegde (Ramesh Arvind), Reddy and Iyer. Murthy finds a life partner in Mythili (Simran), who along with him, foils a hijack attempt.

Misunderstandings creep in between them, thanks to Nirmala (Devayani), who once was Hegde's lover. Mythili returns to Chennai and Ram CM follows suit. His friends somehow want to make it up to him and presents him a `Birthday Gift' in Maggie (Ramya Krishnan) .

True to his name, Ram happens to be least interested in wooing Maggie. All hell breaks loose after that with a murder and other sub plots, literally keeping the audience on the edge of the seats.

The film also stars Urvashi, Aishwarya, Nagesh and Devayani, who does a superb cameo as Nirmala.

The story is by Kamal himself. The dialogues are penned by Crazy Mohan, who manages to keep the audience laughing throughout. Songs are by Vairamuthu and Deva. Although one number (Vai raja Vai) is catchy, the rest are not inspiring. Sabu Cyril has created fine settings. Although the film has a thin storyline, it's r those who ve never chase logic in films.
