Godly trend

LOOKS LIKE Star Plus is discovering the power of mega-mythologicals long after the other channels have made these a staple of Indian television. Weekends will soon bring divine darshan on the channel.

Starting Sunday July 7, Star Plus is launching three new shows - Gurukul, Jai Mata Ki and Yatra. For all those devotees of Mata Bhubaneshwari, there is Jai Mata Ki, (Sunday, July 7, 9 a.m.) with Hema Malini in the role of Mata and her different avatars - Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi, Bhubaneshwari, Vaishno Devi, Gauri, Jagdamba. This looks like something Hema Malini was preparing to play for a lifetime!

Another show called Yatra begins on July 7, 10 a.m. This pays homage to pilgrim centres around India, like Vaishno Devi, Golden Temple in Amritsar, Badrinath in Garhwal Himalayas, or the Dargah Sharif in Ajmer.

Yatra actually gets you a darshan of the sanctum sanctorum, where prayers and rituals are being offered to a particular deity. Deepti Bhatnagar is the show's creator and presenter.

The third show is Gurukul, packed with tales of ancient Indian civilization, told through Upanishads, Vedas, Ayurveda, Astrology, Palmistry, Gita - everything that you wanted to know about Indian culture and tradition.

Star Plus is rediscovering ancient Indian stress-busters with a vengeance.
