At a time when officials, who are meant to work for the welfare of tribals, are averse to visiting them in their villages, a team of students came all the way from Belgium to extend a helping hand to the tribals in the far-flung agency areas of Srikakulam district and the neighbouring Orissa State. The team members, led by volunteers of local NGOs trekked the hilly terrains to meet the tribals.

The students are representatives of Brendalik Delen, a voluntary organisation in Belgium, which funds organisations working for the welfare of tribals. The team members take up petty jobs in their country to raise resources for the organisation and distribute the money here. The organisation has been funding the tribal development initiatives in India for the past five years.

The 14-member team, which had 12 students and one representative each from the Belgium-based `Chiro' and `Jakim' visited the tribals in their villages and learnt about the progress of various projects. They interacted with them through gestures. The team was lead by Poojari, a representative of XIVER, an Orissa-based organisation and A. Ramakrishna, a representative of BREDS, which is working for the welfare of tribals in AP.
