Exploding myths

THE WORDS radioactivity and nuclear energy are almost always associated with the horrors of the atomic bomb and the accident in Chernobyl. However, radioactivity has widespread application and is used in a number of fields directly beneficial to mankind such as agriculture, medicine, industry and waste treatment.

To disseminate information related to radioactivity and its applications, the Indian Association of Nuclear Chemists and Allied Scientists (IANCAS), organised a one-day workshop on `Radioactivity' for students of Agarwal Vidyalaya in Vepery recently. Scientists from Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, spoke on radioactivity, its measurement and applications and demonstrated the detection and measurement of radioactivity. At least 60 students participated.

IANCAS, based in Mumbai, has been conducting various activities to increase awareness about radioactivity and its applications. It holds regular workshops for students and teachers explaining the phenomenon of radioactivity, methods of measurement and application in various areas.
