Akhilandeswara Ayyappa

Vijay Yesudas has always struggled with his diction and to come out from the shadow of his illustrious father. Though comparisons are odious, Vijay emerges in this album as a much mature singer. If there is anything special in this set of 10 devotional songs, it is the three songs that Vijay has rendered. The one beginning "Ayyane pon ayyanne... " is the pick of them. The lyrics of Sarathchandra Varma, Kaithapram Viswanathan's tune and the orchestration, all gel to produce a fine song. There are the usual fast, mandatory sing along ones like "Ayyappa nin... " by Vijay and "Swami saranam... " by K.J.Yesudas. These are so integral to the devotional genre, but they tend to be a bit loud and packed with extra effects. Another song in this album, which is worth a second listening, is the one beginning "Sheelichupoyi... ." by Yesudas, which stands out for its sensitive rendering. P.C.Aravindan provides the lyrics for five songs.
