Celluloid saga

WHEN JACKIE Shroff said he wouldn't mind taking up a good role for a full-length TV serial a few years ago, several scoffed at his idea, as the hero wasn't really short of film offers. Today, as we see the medium grow in reach and stature, we have some of the biggest names coming to the small screen. Karisma Kapoor is a case in point. Close on the heels of her "Karishma... Miracles of Destiny" is the remake of Guru Dutt's classic "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" a serial for Sahara TV and Raveena Tandon will play the role essayed by Meena Kumari in the film. It is slated for telecast next March. The best part of the show is that the saga is to be shot in Kolkata to lend an authenticity to the period drama and Rituparno Ghosh has been roped in for direction. Big names such as Sahara and Rituparno were enough for Raveena to grab the offer. But she hastens to add that it is the mother of all challenges. Will the `Sahiba' have a successful TV debut? Watch this space!
