Experience Onam in Chennai at DakshinaChitra from August 26 to September 4

To create awareness of the various village traditions among urbanites, DakshinaChitra is organising Onam Festival of Kerala from August 26 to September 4, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Tuesday is a holiday) at Muttukadu.

The State is a treasure trove of diverse people, arts and craft and Nature plays an important role in the lives and culture of Kerala.

During the festival, there will be vibrant folk performances "Theyyam Thira" of Kerala. The craft shop will take on a Kerala hue with a wide array of Kerala saris and off-white ensembles from the Balaramapuram Weavers' Society and mural paintings on bamboo, coconut shell and terracotta. The art gallery will hold an exhibition of Ravi Varma's paintings and mural paintings by G. Azhicode. Pookolam, thoranams and traditional music from Thayambaka will enhance the festive mood.

The restaurant Kanali will serve Malayali delicacies. In short, you can experience the unique festival amid a fitting backdrop of tharavadus at DakshinaChitra.

On September 2 and 3, a two-day workshop on mural paintings on bamboo handicrafts will be organised, the highlight being the use of natural colours.
