Along came a spider

THE SUPER hero Spider-Man has spun the ultimate web at the Indian box-office. The film has grossed a gargantuan Rs. 5.29 crores over the Friday to Sunday (May 24-26, 2002) period. The friendly neighbourhood marvel comic character demolished all industry records generating the largest opening weekend in box-office history for the Hollywood films in India, from 250 screens.

In Tamil Nadu, the film has grossed Rs. 74 lakhs from 50 screens and has done 100 per cent at Chennai's Sathyam, and even places like Kanchipuram and Vellore. While in Attingal near Thiruvananthapuram, Spidey has taken 94 per cent in the first three days {frac12} a better opening than a Mohanlal film!

Says Uday Singh, Managing Director, Columbia TriStar Films of India, Historic is the only way one can describe the performance of Spider-Man in India. It indeed took a super-hero to deliver these historic numbers. The magnitude of this achievement is staggering by every standard and this box office success has raised the bar for all future blockbuster products.
