Chennai Speaks Out on NDTV-Hindu focusses on issues concerning the differently-abled

The Tamil Nadu Government recently set up an exclusive department for the welfare of differently-abled persons under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. But will this make a difference on the ground? Public spaces continue to be inaccessible for the disabled and travelling on public transport quite a harrowing experience for them. Have mindsets changed?

NDTV-Hindu shows clips of State Transport buses not waiting for physically challenged passengers to get on board. And conductors insisting on charging luggage fees for even wheelchairs! Not long ago an insensitive CISF officer refused to allow an autistic boy on a flight on the ground that he posed a "threat" to other passengers.

Visually challenged students complain about sub standard scribes provided at exam time. For instance, drawing teachers for accountancy papers! Aircel Chennai Speaks Out with Sanjay Pinto on whether we care enough for the disabled will be telecast on Sunday at 12 noon and 10 p.m. on NDTV-Hindu and on Monday and Wednesday at 10pm. (NDTV-Hindu is available on SCV, Reliance Big TV & Tata Sky. On Tata Sky, the channel is available through NDTV 24x7)
