Gestational diabetes requires extra care and nutritional guidance

If you have gestational diabetes — diabetes during pregnancy — choosing the right food is especially important. It can be controlled by eating well and regular exercise. Some people can get by without medication. Here are some pointers to follow:

* Never skip meals. Be consistent about when and how much you eat. Your blood sugar level will be stable if your food is distributed evenly and consistently from day to day.

* Eating a good breakfast can help you regulate your blood sugar levels throughout the morning.

* I believe pregnant women who are well nourished are more likely to have a safe and uncomplicated pregnancy; there is a strong link between deficiencies in diet and pregnancy complications. For instance, anaemia, a common pregnancy complication characterized by low levels of red blood cells, is directly connected to iron deficiency. Eating a well-balanced nutritious diet, adequate in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients will reduce your risk of complications and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

* A diet rich in folic acid is a must for a pregnant woman and her developing foetus. Apart from taking a folic acid supplement, pregnant women should include foods rich in folate.
