Schools resort to three types of corporal punishment – physical, emotional and negative reinforcement. But it does not help in instilling discipline in a child. Discipline is something inherent and much depends on the education imparted to students. Discipline is attitude, part of character building, responsibility and commitment. Children can be punished for erring but it should be non-violent and not harm the child either mentally or physically. Schools have an enormous responsibility in helping the child to learn without fear. It should not aggravate a child's difficulty or problem by further crushing their self esteem or hitting out at them. Lalitha Chandrasekar,
