Meet “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge” finalist Yashita Yashpal Sharma

The mushrooming talent hunts are bringing instant recognition to the young and also throwing up little celebrities with unusual tales of their own. An instance is Yashita Yashpal Sharma, a finalist of Zee TV’s Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009. Recalling her early years, the upcoming singer frankly said, “I took up singing because I love it and it’s easier than mathematics.” She added, “I was so much involved in singing that once I wrote the antara of a song in my Board exams.”

Yashita, now settled in Mumbai, said, “My mother used to insist that I do my riyaaz (practice) regularly. On the other hand, people initially used to ask me to keep quiet as I was not a great singer. Now the same people want me to sing all the time.” Among Yashita’s admirers is Alka Yagnik, one of the show judges. The celebrated singer said, “She is a very good singer and has a good voice quality and a grasping power which is essential to become a good singer.”

Noted music composer Pritam Chakravarty, who is the mentor of the show’s Dhoom Gharana of which Yashita is a part, was also in New Delhi requesting Delhiites to vote for Yashita. Pritam said, “I am here to support Yashita. Winning the competition is as important to me as it is to Yashita. Her voice quality is good, she is musically intelligent and a consistent performer. After just two-three performances I realised there is a winner in her. The only thing she lacks is training in pure classical, but I am confident that she will overcome it soon.”

Yashita on her part said she felt lucky to be guided by someone like Pritam, saying, “He keeps boosting my confidence level all the time and never makes me feel nervous.”

This Ryan School product is competing with two other aspirants — Vaishali Made and Shoumen Nandi. A victory here would give her a singing contract of Rs.50 lakhs and a Hyundai i10 car.
