Watch a festival of films from Brazil

The Embassy of Brazil, New Delhi, and Indo-Cine Appreciation Foundation organise a Brazilian film festival from July 27 to 29. The fest is dedicated to Sao Paulo. The films to be screened at the fest are “Linha De Passe”, “Vilanova Artigas, The Architect”, “Carandiru”, “Sao Paulo Sociedade Anonima” and “Sao Paulo, A Metropole”.

“Linha De Passe”, directed by Walter Salles-Daniela Thomas, will be screened at 6.15 p.m on July 27. It tells the story of four poverty-stricken half brothers with the same mother, Cleuza, who have to fight to follow their dreams. Cleuza, pregnant with her fifth child, works as a cleaner for a woman in a middle class area of São Paulo.

“Vilanova Artigas, The Architect”, directed by Caca Vicalvi, will be screened at 8 p.m. on July 27. It is a documentary on Vilanova Artigas, one of the most important Brazilian modernist architects. Born in Curitiba and much-awarded in his lifetime, Artigas is considered one of the most important names in the architectural history of São Paulo.

“Carandiru”, directed by Hector Babenco, will be screened at 6.15 p.m. on July 28. This film is based on the real-life experiences of doctor Drauzio Varella inside the State penitentiary Carandiru, in São Paulo.

“Sao Paulo, Sociedade Anonima” directed by Luis Sergio Person will be screened on July 29 at 6.15 p.m. Carlos leaves his wife Luciana and his son seeking a new beginning. Myriad experiences see him losing his identity and becoming part of the process of industrialisation of São Paulo.

The concluding film “Sao Paulo, A Metropole” directed by Adalberto Kemeny will be screened the same day at 8 p.m. This documentary is about the city of São Paulo, which is modelled on Berlin.
