Basketball Tournament benefits from alumni support

T he Fr. Devasia memorial inter school basketball tournament for boys and girls recently completed its ninth edition at St. Patricks High School. Over the years, the St. Patricks Alumni Network (SPAN) has conducted the event with a fidelity few ex-students will have for their alma mater. The quality of the competition has registered a rise too, with Hyderabad Public School and St. Anthony's emerging winners this year in the boys and girls categories respectively. Santosh Reddy (St. Andrews) and Monica Goud (St. Anthony's) were adjudged best players, Rohan P (HPS) and Manisha (St. Pious) the best defensive players, while Nihal (Indus World School) and Aishwarya (Future Kids) were declared the most promising.

SPAN President Mohd. Rizwan is at the forefront of the organising committee, ably assisted by Secretary Samson Jacob. Venkatramana of Jupiter Bio has always been a major donor as also the batch of 1977. The trophies for this year's event have been donated by V. Srinivas Rao and Ponnala Navnit, President and Vice President of the school's 1980 batch.

Untiring in his efforts has been Syed Shahabuddin, who dons many hats: referee, coach and media spokesman. Equally encouraging has been the final day's chief guest, L.C. Umakanth. The former international has been donating the mementos for years. The chief guest for the inaugural was Kathuri Kaushik, Director, Renewable Energies and Kada Megha Sham, Assistant Manager, Grant Thornton, the guest of honour, both of them old students of the school.
