Tribute to Harikatha exponent

RICH TRIBUTES were paid to the Harikatha exponent Sri Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavatar by various speakers at a function held at the Ragasudha Hall, under the auspices of the Sri Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavatar Cultural Trust. A book on the vidwan, cassettes of his compositions and a CD of his musical discourse of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar charitram were released on the occasion. Mr. N. R. Chandran, Advocate General, Tamil Nadu, released the book and the cassettes while Dr. V. V. Srivatsa, musicologist and secretary of the Music Academy, Chennai, released the CD.

Prof. T. R. Subramaniam said that Mannargudi Sambasivan composed kritis even during the days when creation of new kritis was frowned upon. What is more one of his kritis was sung by none other than his own guru Maharajapuram Viswanatha Aiyar. Dr. Srivatsa called the CD on Muthuswamy Dikshitar unique. Mr. B. Madhavan, Secretary, Sanskrit College, Chennai, violin vidwan M. Chandrasekaran also spoke on the achievements of the veteran vidwan as musician-musicologist composer-Haritkatha exponent and a kindhearted teacher.

Sambasiva Bhagavatar, in his reply, said whatever service he had done to Carnatic music and the Vidwat samajam was due to the blessings of elders and public patronage. Namagiri Ramesh, accompanied by Jayanti Kesav (violin) and Umayalpuram Kalyanaraman (mridangam) rendered the compositions of Sambasiva Bhagavatar.
