BEST TRP: "Paadhigal" is an in-house production of Doordarshan

"Paadhaigal," an in-house production of Doordharshan (DD) with its own resources, is completing its 100th episode. It has the best TRP rating till now and has bounced to the top position according to the TAM report several times.

Syed Rafeeq Basha has produced and directed this serial based on his own story. As a trained television producer and director from the Pune Film and Televison institute, Basha underwent special training in art direction and has taken care of that aspect With over 50 teleplays and 25 tele-films to his credit, Basha has won the national award for his tele-film "AGARAM" based on science fiction.

The impact of the small screen and the enduring quality of soaps which keep thousands glued to their seats made him turn his attention to serials.

A unique feature is that it is a cent per cent in-house production. DD has always been producing mega serials but in this venture right from the director to the errand boy everybody is a DD employee. ``We just wanted to show that DD is technically capable of producing quality serials," says Mr. Basha.

The idea of producing a mega-serial met with the approval of the Deputy Director General, Ashok Jail Kani. With the higher-ups supporting the concept, work got under way without a hitch.

What about resource? DD's reserve funds were used and enthusiastic, hardworking technicians came forward to help Mr. Basha.

Incidentally the story line is based on a novel of the same name written by him. The author is proud that the soap has well-etched characters and is not a sob story, factors that have boosted the rating of the serial, he feels.

The cast includes Devadarshini, Kamalesh, Sowmiyan, Bharath, Anjana, Sivan Srinivas, Gowri, Usha Priya, Jayanthi, Julie, Hari Krishnan, Ravindarnath, Soundarya, Rajashri and Irfan Khan. Camera is handled by P. S. Govindraj and N. Suresh.

Set erection is being done by P. Venu Gopal and Parthasarathy. Rajapandian, Leo Prabhu, Arun and Mullai Selvaraj are in charge of dialogue and story. The serial is edited by R. Sridhar and N. R. Balachandaran.

Since it is based on a novel, the script cannot be stretched but there is definitely scope for another 250 episodes, the director feels. ``The artistes are entirely at home here. On the whole it has been an enjoyable experience," he concludes.
