Madurai Mani's legacy

Sir, — This is with reference to the article, "He charmed young and old alike" on the late Madurai Mani Iyer by Lakshmi Devanath, (October 25). As an ardent admirer and devout rasika of Madurai Mani Iyer's music, I would like to provide the following information: Madurai Mani Iyer had two sishyas - T. S. Vembu Iyer and Tiruvengadu A. Jayaraman — prior to the induction of T. V. Sankaranarayanan. Vembu Iyer did not give many solo performances, but extended vocal support to Madurai Mani Iyer. Tiruvengadu Jayaraman is a top-grade performing artiste with AIR. He underwent Guru Kula Vaasam for nearly 20 years. His rendering of kalpanaswaras is greatly enjoyed and appreciated by rasikas.

L. Ranganathan,
