Bet on TRPs!

With the Election Commission’s ban on dissemination of opinion and exit polls till the end of the last phase of elections, news channels are resorting to SMS polls and punters to gauge the public mood and keep the studio discussions going. Even respectable channels like NDTV are resorting to these latest tools of psephology! The good old Prannoy Roy was heard saying the predictions of the betting market are usually right because people bet their money practically without party affiliations. But does the rural India have enough money to send expensive SMSes or bet on politicians. It just has the vote.

News at leisure

BIG TV, one of the leading DTH players in the country, has come up with Election Special as part of its interactive service iNEWS. The content is provided by CNN-IBN. Tata Sky already has content arrangement with NDTV and Star News for its Active service but by making it election specific, BIG TV has shown a focussed approach. Viewers can choose from eight windows including live feeds of CNN-IBN and IBN 7, top headlines and Lok Sabha 09 – dedicated feed for news and views on General Elections 2009 .

Fresh material

After lying low for some time, Star World is consolidating its programming with a slew of new programmes this May. “Lipstick Jungle” explores the chic world of three successful New York women. It is based on Candace Bushnell’s novel. The discerning would know that “Sex and the City” is also a Bushnell’s creation. Then there is “Superstars of Dance” where teams of professional dancers from eight countries, including India, fight it out. Also on cards are new seasons of “Last Comic Standing” and “The Celebrity Apprentice”.
