Cries for attention: The Siva temple at Kizhiruppu.

An ancient Siva temple located at Kizhiruppu, 16 km from Mayiladuturai, is in ruins, so much so that the local people have formed a committee to build it all over again. Dating back to the 12th century, the temple, where the presiding deity is Sri Chidambareswarar, enjoyed Chola patronage but lost its glory after that despite some attention from the Nayaks. Festivals were conducted with great fanfare, say inscriptions.

The lingam stands under a thatched roof. The idols of Sivagami Ambal, Nandi, Vinayaka and Subramanya are scattered. For details contact Mahalakshmi Subramaniam, Flat No. 3, Thulasi Apartments, 11, Kuppuswamy Street, T. Nagar. Phone 28152533.
