Noteworthy recital

Subba Lakshmi.

Vocalist N. Subba Lakshmi impressed with her good ‘sruthi’.

Having a good sruthi and voice, Lakshmi needs to work on her voice modulation.

Kalasagaram recently hosted a vocal recital by N. Subba Lakshmi as part of its monthly concert at Key’s High School. Subba Lakshmi is in a state of transformation as she is slowly shifting her style from fixed notation paddathi to manodharma sangeetham. Having a good sruthi and voice, Lakshmi needs to work on her voice modulation.

Confident rendition

Subba Lakshmi began her recital with Natkuranji Varnam in a steady way and went on to sing Swsaminatha in Natai with set swaram. Hamsanadam was taken for a detailed alapand the krithi Bantureethi Koluvu of Thyagaraja sounded mechanical with swaram at a speedy pace. Nee daya radha in Kalyana Vasantham was a noteworthy presentation. Poorvikalyani was taken for a brief expansion and Thyagaraja’s Gnanamosagaradha in Rupakam was the krithi. Marugela ra in Jayanthasree of Thyagaraja was a routine fast number before going for the main ragam Thodi. Thodi is such a ragam where in it is easy to attempt but very difficult to impress.

Good acompaniments

The pakkavadyams sounded loud on the day. Jayabhasker showed his experience on the mridangam with his decent support and his tani with Shyam for ara edam in Adi talam was a treat.
