Masters Degree in Sociology

I am pursuing my graduation and after successfully completing it, I would like to do a Masters Degree Programme in Sociology. Which are the best institutes in India offering this programme? What is the selection procedure? I would also like to know about the scope of sociology from the career point of view.

Sociology, as a discipline engages itself in the description and explanation of social structures and processes. Studying sociology not only increases one’s understanding of human society but also helps one to classify human social behaviour systematically. It also helps in the understanding of the social, religious, political, economic and governmental institutions in society, their changing nature and impact on every day life.

Sociology is a subject that attracts many students. Specialisation areas for Masters Degree Programmes in Sociology include industrial sociology, medical sociology and social psychology. Graduates in any discipline are eligible for admission to Masters Programmes in Sociology. After the successful of completion of MA with good marks one could enrol for M.Phil. or Ph.D. programmes. Those who qualify the UGC-Junior Research Fellowship (NET) Examination could secure a fellowship for Research leading to the award of a Ph.D. degree.

Syllabus for MA

Syllabus for masters in sociology is more or less same in almost all universities. The syllabus covers history or social thought, social stratification concepts and theories, populations and society, social dimensions of development, urban sociology, peasant and rural sociology in India, sociology of family, industrial sociology, sociology of health – concepts and organizational theory, sociology of legal systems, interpretation of sociological theories, methods and techniques in social research, basic methods in population studies, social development in India, sociology of gender roles, political sociology, determinants and concepts of population growth, sociology of human migration, rural development in India, environmental crisis and sustainable development, political economy of industrialisation and labour, community health, social problems, etc. Core courses and elective courses are included in the syllabus. Duration of the course is two years.

Selection is based on a common entrance test for admission to various PG programmes conducted by the University of Kerala. Bachelor’s degree holders in any discipline with 45 per cent (5 per cent relaxation in marks for SC/ST candidates) marks are eligible to appear for the entrance test. Medical sociology

The Department of Sociology / Medical Sociology under Loyola College, Chennai – 600034 offers MA Medical Sociology. Career prospects

Those who successfully complete Masters or M.Phil. or Ph.D. programmes in Sociology can make a career as a lecturer/faculty member not only in the academic field but also in various fields in capacities such as those of a field work analyst, human resource officer, research assistant, etc. In Research, one can become a data analyst, survey researcher, project manager and so on. Besides this one can also get jobs in government organisations as personnel coordinator, community affairs officer, foreign service officer, human rights officer and so on

Those who specialise in social psychology can work as counsellors in hospitals or with NGOs. Those who specialise in medical sociology can work as a data collection officer in the filed of medical research. Social welfare specialisation is a wide field that offers options to work in hospitals and nongovernmental organisations. Qualified sociologists will be considered for a job as probation officers in various child welfare departments and they can be placed in charge of juvenile homes or observation cells. International bodies such as World Health Organisation and United Nations Organisation sometimes advertise projects wherein the services of people with knowledge of sociology are required.

Social Welfare Departments of State governments carry out research projects for which sociologists are required. Qualified sociologists are appointed as probation officers in child welfare schemes and juvenile homes. Organisations concerned with planning of policies for specific sections of society like commissions for women, children, etc. offer ample opportunities for those who are highly qualified in sociology or allied specializations.

Population and development studies will open new vistas for those who choose sociology as a career option. Sociology is a good option for those who appear for the civil services examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission annually.
