Petroleum engineering

I am a Plus Two student. I wish to study petroleum engineering. I would like to know about the institutions offering this course.

Petroleum engineering deals with the production, storage and transportation of petroleum and natural gas. Only few institutions conduct petroleum engineering courses at the degree level.

The Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad is a prominent institution under the Government of India offering a four-year B.Tech. course in Petroleum Engineering. The intake capacity is 45 seats. (Reservation – Scheduled Caste – 9, Scheduled Tribe- 5, Physically Challenged- 2). Admission is through the Joint Entrance Examinations held by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT-JEE). Those who have passed Plus Two/equivalent examination with physics, chemistry, mathematics and 60 per cent marks in aggregate (SC/ST/PH candidates require only 55 per cent marks) or are going to write the final year Plus Two examination are eligible to appear for IIT-JEE. Twenty-five per cent of the students are provided with ISM scholarships and free tuition.

ISM is a deemed university as per the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. More details can be either obtained from the website or Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad- 826004.

Other universities/ Institutes conducting petroleum engineering / technology degree courses are:

•School of Engineering and Technology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli ( > – B.Tech. Petroleum Technology.

•Institute of Petroleum Studies and Chemical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.

•Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune – 411038.

In the private sector, the College of Engineering Studies under the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, conducts a B.Tech. in Applied Petroleum Engineering. This programme is designed to develop a new generation of petroleum engineers. Selection is based on AIEEE Score/aptitude test followed by counselling ( >

Ensure AICTE approval before you choose any course.

Graduates in petroleum engineering are likely to get jobs in mineral, coal and petroleum companies/ industries with an attractive remuneration.

M.Tech. in Control Systems

I have completed B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I would like to join M.Tech.. Control Systems. Which are the institutions in South India that offer M.Tech. courses in Control Systems?

Few engineering colleges offer M.Tech. in Control Systems. In Kerala, the Government College of Engineering, Sreekariaym, Thiruvananthapuram, affiliated to the University of Kerala, offers M.Tech.. Electrical Engineering with Control Systems as one of the specialisation areas. Only five seats are available for the specialisation. Other specialisations areas are electrical machines, power systems, guidelines and navigation control, with each having five seats.

Those who have obtained 60 per cent marks (for SC/ST students pass marks are sufficient) in B.Tech. in the respective branch are eligible for admission. Admission is normally based on the GATE Score and scholarships of Rs.5,000 per month are also offered. The duration of this course is 24 months consisting of four semesters. Tuition fee is Rs.3,500 per semester.

Very few Universities provide distance education facilities for B.Tech.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), functioning under the Government of India, offers B.Tech. in Civil (Construction Management and Water Resource Engineering) Courses in the distance education mode.

Those who have passed the three-year Diploma Course in Civil/ Mechanical / Electrical / Computer/ Architecture/ Chemical Engineering and are employed in the relevant fields are eligible for admission.

The four-year B.Tech. Civil Construction Management Programme has been designed to impart training and continuing professional education to upgrade diploma-level manpower engaged in managing construction tasks.

The programme structure has been designed so as to provide inbuilt modularity and flexibility.

The successful completion of the first two modules (first and second year) makes you eligible for the award of Advanced Diploma in Construction Management (ADCM). The student will have the flexibility to study either ADCM and exit from the system or to complete the B.Tech. degree.

B.Tech. Civil (Water Resource Engineering) is a continuing education programme for working diploma holders engaged in the water resources sector. It is also a four year degree programme that offers inbuilt flexibility in terms of intermediate award of Advanced Diploma in Water Resource Engineering (ADWRE) after successful completion of first two modules.

Students also have an option to discontinue after obtaining ADWRE and take up studies as a later date to complete the degree programmes. For more details visit >
