NIT-K to set up centres of excellence

The National Institute of Technology-Karnatka (NIT-K), the only NIT in Karnataka, based at Surathkal near Mangalore, is on an expansion mode.

It plans to open three centres of excellence to take up research and development activities and two new postgraduation courses.

According to Sandeep Sancheti, institute director, the new centres will focus on disaster management, sustainable technology and materials.

“We have seeded some of the activities related to these centres. We are yet to create the physical infrastructure but external interaction on the activities of these centres has begun,” Prof. Sancheti said.

“Our intention is to start the activities first and then create the infrastructure.”

Expert help

All of them will be inter-disciplinary centres. Each centre will have at least five experts representing different branches of engineering to carry out and guide research and development activities.

Prof. Sancheti is confident that the institute will be able to get financial assistance from the World Bank through the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

This is because the World Bank Phase II Project is likely to support research, particularly of inter-disciplinary nature.

If the institute fails to get World Bank fund it will look to other agencies and use its internal resources too.
