The United Progressive Alliance Government is committed to maintaining autonomy of institutions of higher learning and it will not be diluted, Union Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh said recently. "The autonomy of the educational institutions will not be allowed to be diluted," Mr. Singh said in his inaugural address at the North Zone Vice-Chancellors' Conference at Maharishi Dayanand University at Rohtak.

"The world is passing through an era of knowledge revolution and the frontiers of education are expanding. "The need of the hour is to establish an atmosphere of mutual participation in educational sector so that access of people in higher education is increased," he said.

Paying tributes to social reformer Swami Dayanand, after whom the university has been named, Mr. Singh said that the Swami's qualities, such as intellectual honesty and courage of conviction, needed to be emulated.
