Meeting of State Higher Education Ministers next month

The Centre has convened a meeting of State Higher Education Ministers at Bangalore next month to consider the issue of enactment of a Central legislation to control self-financing institutions. This assurance was given recently by Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh, to a delegation of students which wanted enactment of a Central legislation for the purpose.

The Minister said education being a subject in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, the meeting was necessary to arrive at a consensus on the issue, an official release said.

In their representation, the delegation of Left-leaning Students' Federation of India (SFI), All India Student's Block (AISB) and All India Progressive Students' Union demanded a law to empower State governments to control unaided self-financing institutes, a complete control on deemed universities, de-recognition of substandard institutes and a halt to commercialisation of education.

IIM may come up in Shillong

The Centre is favourably inclined to setting up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, to give the North-East yet another prestigious educational institution.

A three-member committee appointed to go into the issue is understood to have firmed up its opinion in establishing the IIM in Shillong, Human Resource Development Ministry sources said.

The committee will finalise its report soon and submit it to the DONER which would in turn send it to Human Resource Development Minister.
