INDUSTRY SUPPORT: Twenty four students were offered jobs under the `NMC Lason Bridge Programme' for the final year students of Nehru Memorial College, Tiruchi.  



The Department of Production Engineering, National Institute of Technology, recently conducted a workshop on `Recent Trends in Manufacturing and Materials'. The workshop helped teachers from engineering colleges acquire knowledge in frontier areas such as rapid response manufacturing techniques, recent trends in inspection for the improvement of quality of products in the global competitive scenario, impact of nano manufacturing in a nano era, flexible manufacturing concepts, and micro-electrical mechanical system — fundamentals.According to G. Prabhaharan of the department, professors, Ramesh Babu and Ramamoorthy of IIT-Madras, S. Aravindan, Asokan, and Uma of NIT, V. Sivan, Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, and T. Selvaraj, Head of the department, presented lectures.M.K. Palaniappan, Deputy General Manager, Rane Power Steering Limited, TRW, Viralimalai, spoke on LEAN manufacturing concepts, while A. Velayutham, Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, Avadi, explained the machining and manufacturing methods of super alloys, composites, alloy components for aerospace, automotive and military applications. S.M. Mahajan, General Manager, Centre for Manufacturing Technology and Investment Planning, BHEL, New Delhi, delivered the inaugural address.* * *The Institute of Rolling Stock Engineers, Southern Railway, has offered a scholarship for a project on `Evolution of Rolling Stock Designs in Railways', to St. Joseph's College, in recognition of its 150-year history.The Rs. 2 lakh-project, including a scholarship of Rs. 6,000 a month for a two-year period, entails compilation of a research paper on the topic. The institute, a technical body of Railway Engineers connected with the design and maintenance of Rolling Stock, Viz., locomotives, carriages, and wagons, seeks to upgrade technology in the field with specific reference to Southern Railway, through a Ph.D project.The project is expected to be of high calibre, quality and authenticity, to serve as a valuable reference document. The institute has permitted the college to utilise the Heritage Library located in the Divisional Manager Office Complex for the purpose. The college has identified a professor and a research scholar for the project, said the principal, Fr. R. Rajarathinam.* * *About 24 students of the MCA and M.Sc Computer Science disciplines of Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, Tiruchi district, got placement during the campus interview conducted by Lason India Limited, Chennai, recently. The college, a pioneering institute in the field of computer education, has entered into an agreement with Lason India to train the students in developing their skills necessary for employment in the IT industry. The company introduced a novel in-housing training programme called `NMC Lason Bridge Programme' for the final-year students. The experts from the company imparted training to the students in various areas. At the end of the programme, the company conducted the campus interview. About 170 final-year students participated in the written test and preliminary interview. A technical and personal interview was conducted for the short-listed candidates and 24 were selected for the post of `Trainee Engineer-Application Development'. The offer letters were handed over to the selected candidates by the college secretary M. Ponnambalam and former Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, Muthiah Mariappan. * * *The Department of Physics of Holy Cross College organised a day-long seminar on `Photonics and its applications' recently. Vice-Principal Sr. Sarguna Mary delivered the inaugural address. P.S. Joseph, Reader of Physics, Periyar E.V.R. College, presented a paper on `Introduction to photonics'. Dr. S. Palaniappan of Sethu ENT Research Centre spoke on `laser in medicine'. Dr. K. L. Srinivasan from the GVN Institute of Oncology, speaking on `Photonics in medical imaging' listed out the evolution and innovation in the various medical imaging instruments and also brought to light its practical applications. The Head of the Department of Computer Science, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, P. Sakthivel, in his lecture on `Bio-Photonics' underlined the significant concepts and implementation of Photonics in Biology. * * *The Deputy Director of Medical Services, Perambalur, G. Gitanjali, inaugurated the Red Ribbon Club of Jenneys Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management. Staff co-ordinator K. Prabhakar gave details of the club's proposed activities He said the main aim was to create an awareness about HIV/AIDS among the students and the rural people. (CONTRIBUTED BY R.
