U.K. offers scholarships to Tamil Nadu students

The last date for application submission is December 15, 2009.

International consulting firm Education Matters is offering scholarships to study at 15 U.K. universities in the January 2010 intake.

A total of 60 scholarships are available for students from Tamil Nadu. The value of the scholarships range from 500 to 4000 U.K. pounds. Eight students from the State will receive a Rs. 80,000 scholarship, while one will be eligible to compete for the all-India scholarship of Rs. 3 lakh. These scholarships are over and above any scholarship being offered by the universities themselves.

The scholarships are available for the following universities: University of Bedfordshire, Birmingham City University, University of Glamorgan, Glasgow Caledonian University, Kingston University, University of Leicester, Liverpool Hope University, Nottingham Trent University, Oxford Brookes University, University of Plymouth, Robert Gordon University, Sheffield Hallam University, Thames Valley University, Staffordshire University and the University of Wales Newport.

The scholarship programme is being launched at Taj Connemara Hotel on November 10, 2009, when Education Matters is hosting an overseas education exhibition. Some of the universities are also offering spot admissions during the event. This will help the student get admission, and apply for the scholarships at the same venue.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must apply for admission to one of the participating universities through Education Matters and must obtain an unconditional offer of admission in the January 2010 intake by December 15, 2009. Candidates must have an IELTS score of 6 or above before that date and must have a first-class basic degree. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of both academic and economic backgrounds and the scholarship amount may be adjusted towards the final tuition fees.
