Seminar on optical communication


A seminar on ‘Recent advances in optical communication,’ organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Vickram College of Engineering, Enathi, was inaugurated by S. Mohan, Vice-Chancellor, PRIST University, Thanjavur. In his address, Dr. Mohan, said that laser and fibre optics were twin developments in the realm of science and technology, which would bring major breakthroughs in medical surgeries in the years to come. He felt that fibre optics was a promising domain with a lot of scope for research and development. His focus was on the use of optical fibre amplifiers, a new technology that had come to stay.

In his presidential address, the chairman of the college, M.K. Srinivasan, remarked that fibre optics had broken new ground in the field of communication. Balaji Srinivas from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, spoke on the applications of fibre optics in the field of communication. Thomas Lee, Senior Design Engineer, Fiber Optika Technologies, made a presentation on the developments in the field of optical communication. P.K. Palanisamy of Anna University elaborated the achievements in the field of optical communication.

The Principal, M. Palanikumar, welcomed. Suji Ravi Issac, Head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, explained the purpose of the seminar. V. K. Sanjeevi, General Manager, BSNL, delivered the valedictory address. Sixty delegates from 28 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring States participated in the seminar. V. Punitha proposed a vote of thanks.
