What is industrial engineering? Kindly let me know the details of the institutions that offer B.Tech. degree in industrial engineering, the selection procedures and related career prospects.

SMIJO JOSE, EMAIL

Industrial engineering is an emerging discipline that deals with the design, development, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems, which include human knowledge, equipment, energy, material and processes that are needed for an industry.

The discipline uses the principles and methods of engineering analysis to makes processes more efficient. The discipline also aims at eliminating waste of time, money, materials, energy and other resources. In short, industrial engineers integrate people, technology and information to improve efficiency. It is also a combination of mechanical engineering and management.

B.Tech. degree

The discipline mainly comes under the streams of science and engineering. For the degree course, the subjects covered include mechanical engineering, project management, human aspects of management, decision modelling and operations research. Industrial management as a specialisation can also be pursued. The main objective of the course will be to equip students to become middle-level management professionals in the industrial field. An M.Tech. degree in industrial engineering is equivalent to an MBA degree.

Study facilities

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the prominent institutes that offer the four-year B.Tech. degree in industrial engineering. IITs at Kharagpur ( www.iitkgp.ernet.in), Delhi ( www.iitd.ac.in) and Roorkee ( www.iitr.ac.in) offer a four-year B.Tech. course in production and industrial engineering.

IIT Kharagpur also offers integrated M.Tech. or dual degree course— B. Tech in manufacturing science and engineering and M. Tech in industrial engineering and management.

Admission to these programmes is through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted every year.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the B.Tech in industrial engineering course at IIT Kharagpur is broadly divided into two sections:

The first section includes mathematics, physics, chemistry, basic electronics, mechanics, electrical technology, engineering drawing and graphics, introduction to manufacturing process, programming and data structure and English for communication. These subjects help students to establish a solid base in the principles of engineering sciences.

The second section specifically deals with the discipline of industrial engineering. The subjects include engineering economy, costing and accounting, information systems, operations research, production planning and control, casting-forming and welding, quality design and control, machine tools and machining facility layout and design, simulation, management of inventory system, work system design and so on.

Students of industrial engineering will have to undergo product development (with project) classes along with industrial training and viva, before earning their B.Tech. degree.

The Manipal Institute of Technology offers a BE course in industrial and production engineering. Selection is based on an online entrance test. More details can be had from the website www.manipal.edu.

In Kerala

B.Tech. degree courses in industrial engineering are very rare in the State. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Government Engineering College, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram-695016 offers B.Tech. degree in industrial engineering. A total of 31 seats are available. The selection is based on the rank obtained in the State engineering entrance examination. Those who have passed Plus Two with 50 per cent marks in mathematics and 50 per cent marks in mathematics, physics and chemistry / biotechnology / computer science/ biology in aggregate are eligible to appear for the engineering entrance examination.

Students can also take up mechanical engineering for B.Tech. degree, and later pursue MBA or a postgraduate programme in management at leading institutes like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli, NMIMS University, NIT Calicut and so on.

Students can also write the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in the final or pre-final year of their B.Tech. degree course if they wish pursue M.Tech. in industrial engineering with scholarship.
