New courses from MGR medical university

In an effort to ensure that there are enough teachers in medical education, the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University has proposed to introduce a number of post-graduate courses from the current academic year.

The course

The courses include M.Sc. in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pharmacology and a M.D. course in Pathology. A decision to that effect was taken in the governing council meeting of the university held recently.

Five seats will be offered in each of these courses. The classes would be conducted in the university but for practical sessions the students would go to the affiliated colleges in the State, said vice chancellor K. Meer Mustafa Hussain. The introduction of these courses is expected to take care of the shortage of non-clinical teaching staff in medical colleges.

At present, the university is the only institution in the country offering an M.D. course in Immuno Haematology.

The course is offered by the Department of Transfusion Medicine. At present, only two students are admitted to the course, but the university has proposed to increase the number of seats from this year.
