GATE pattern changes

Aspirants can take a mock test online at www.gatefo- rum.com

Here is some good and bad news for candidates who would be appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE). While the time limit of three hours to attempt the paper remains unchanged, some major changes will greet the candidates. However, the GATE score would be valid just for an year from this year onwards.

There will be a total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks. While the first 20 questions carry one mark each, the next 30 questions would carry two marks and the last 10 would carry two marks.

Questions 51 to 56 will be common data questions and question pairs-57, 58 and 59, 60 will be linked answer questions. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated.

Negative marks

For each wrong answer given for questions 1 to 20, 1/3 mark will be deducted, while 2/3 mark would be cut for every wrong attempt for questions 21 to 56. There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for questions 57 and 59, 2/3 mark will be cut off for each wrong answer. However, for questions 58 and 60 there is no negative marking.

All papers with codes AE, AG, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI and TF will have bits on engineering mathematics carrying between 15 and 20 marks. Third year engineering students are still eligible to give the exam.

Online test

Helping students acclimatise to the new pattern, Gateforum, an online portal for GATE aspirants is conducting a free online mock test. Students have to register in to ‘ >www.gateforum.com’ and take the three hour test. They can later check the key and also listen to discussion of paper by expert faculty. Apart from this, the website would also provide them with their All India Rank and a thorough analysis of their performance.
