The Department of Physics of National College in Tiruchi recently conducted one-day workshop on ‘total solar eclipse 2009’ sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) and National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC). The Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education T.Nallathambi inaugurated the workshop and principal K. Anbarasu presided. Nearly 120 students from various colleges attended the workshop. S. Parthasarathy, Scientific Officer from IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research), Kalpakkam, Kamal Lodaya of Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, S. S. Sarvesh, Member, Tamil Nadu Astronomy Association, P. S. Joseph, principal, Chidambaram Pillai College for Women spoke on astronomy and solar eclipse. K.Sivasamy, Assistant Director of Tamil Development delivered valedictory address.

The PG department of social work of Jamal Mohamed College and National Service Scheme of Bharathidasan University in Tiruchi recently conducted an awareness programme on swine flu through a cultural programme opf `thappattam and street play’ at St.Thanislass Middle School in Tiruchi. A.Elakkumi Praba, Bharathidasan University NSS programme officer, spoke about the causes for the swine flu and it could be prevented. Dr.K.Ashok Kumar of Kaveri Clinic, Sr.Paulin Saroja, Headmistress of St.Thannislass Middle School, K.Sheik Fareeth, Lecturer, Departmenet of Social Work, Jamal Mohamed College and others spoke.

The Electronics and Communication Engineering department of MAM College of Engineering in Tiruchi, recently conducted a workshop on ‘3G and beyond’, a national level technical symposium. M.A.Maluk Mohamed, principal, delivered a lecture on introduction to mobile computing and highlighted two communication networks of mobile network and ad hoc network. P.Ravikumar, Deputy General Manager of BSNL, who inaugurated the workshop spoke about 3G technology and emerging trends in 3G. More than 70 students from various engineering colleges attended the workshop.

The Department of Electronics and Communication of MAM College of Engineering in Tiruchi recently conducted a seminar on digital image processing. K.Bommana Raja, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of PSNA College of Engineering, Dindigul who was the chief guest, spoke on `image transforms and its applications and adjacency matrix based objects representation for human identification in images’. A.Vadivel, Asisstant Professor, Department of Computer Applications, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, spoke on `content based image and video retrieval using the properties of the HSV colour space, multimedia mining from internet for relevant information retrieval and digital mammogram analysis’. M.A.Maluk Mohamed, principal, B.Syed Moinuddin Bokhari, HoD, ECE department, G.Kalpanadevi, coordinator of Association of Communicative Electronics and others spoke.

The National Service Scheme of National College in Tiruchi recently organised a orientation programme for the first year NSS volunteers. K.Kanagaraju, NSS programme coordinator of Bhatathidasan University who was the chief guest, motivated the volunteers to join the NSS and spoke about its importance in their career, etc. K.Anbarasu, principal, who presided over the programme, motivated the students to join NSS and serve the country. More than 200 NSS volunteers took part in the orientation programme.

The English Association (unaided courses) of National College was inaugurated by M. Sankaran, Head of the Department of English of the college recently. He delivered a special lecture on the role of mass media in learning literature. K.Raghunathan, secretary and A. Krishnamoorthy, vice-principal of the college and others spoke.
