Dr. Chandralekha, who shimmers as a ray of hope for many childless couples in the State by helping them to bear a child through specialised fertility treatment, has now achieved a rare feat by helping a couple to have an offspring by using frozen sperm and eggs from undisclosed donors.

Dr. Chandralekha, Medical Director of Iswarya Women's Hospital and Fertility Centre, Adyar, says: “It was the first time in India when frozen sperms were injected into frozen eggs in an IVF laboratory through ICSI procedure. The result was the birth of a charming boy baby weighing 2.3 kg.”

The couple, Mrs. Meenu, 37, and Mr. Kannan, 45, (names changed) who were married for 10 years but were childless, approached Dr. Chandralekha last year.

“A medical check-up revealed that the wife suffered from premature ovarian failure and the husband had Testicular dysgenesis. All previous fertility treatments ended in failure for them. We opted to go for both frozen eggs (oocytes that were frozen seven months earlier) and frozen sperms that were obtained from healthy donors. Five frozen eggs were thawed and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm injection) was done with similarly thawed frozen sperms in July 2010. This resulted in three good embryos which were transferred to the woman's uterus,” she said.

After pregnancy was confirmed, the medical team monitored the pregnancy till term. The baby boy was born through caesarian section and is doing well now weighing 3.1 kg.

This freezing technique can be used for preserving sperms and eggs of persons suffering from cancer who need to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the doctor said.

Previously the doctor had delivered twins for a woman who had double uterus, which was also a rare achievement.

Iswarya Womens Hospital and Fertility Centre, that has branches in Coimbatore, Madurai and Palani, offers dedicated fertility treatments for men and women from basic to highly sophisticated treatments like IUI, IVF, ICSI, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries, Cryo freezing and surrogacy.
