‘Accessing T15 police station is not easy’

A common complaint from people who have visited the T15 Police Station on Mettur Road, off Mount Ponnamalle Main Road in Iyyapanthangal: It is not easily accessible.

Those who can’t organise their own transport and rely on public transport have a particularly difficult time reaching the station, as access to it by way of MTC buses is poor. The section are also low on share-autorickshaw services. As the possibility if finding a customer on the return journey is quite low, most auto-rickshaw drivers turn down offers to the station. It is one kilometre from the bus terminus on Mount – Poonamallee Main Road. At night, it is even more difficult as as the street is poorly-illuminated.

The dilapidated building of the police station was demolished and a new building constructed in its place in August 2018. The facility has got tiled floors, a spacious visitors’ hall, separate cabins for inspectors of all the wings: crime, law &order and traffic, lock-ups, strongroom, record room and rest rooms. Besides, there are ramps for the differently-abled. And provisons have been created for the generation of solar power.

“MTC should ply a small bus service through Mettur Road. It will be of much help to women and the aged in reaching the station in a cost-effecive manner. Further, locating the station is also difficult as it is in an interior street and there are no signboards on Mount-Poonamallee Main Road to guide the public to the station,” says K. Saravanan, a resident of Porur.

T15 is one of the 12 police stations that come under T. Nagar Police District of the Greater Police Commissionernate. This station has a strength of around 50 personnel. On an average, around five cases mainly related to petty thefts and public nuisance are reported at the station every day. Residents of Porur, Ramachandra Nagar, Kattupakkam and Samayapuram rely on this police station.

“Appropriate measures will be taken to ensure there is hassle-free access to the police station,” says a source from the police department.
