My first break

How it happened

I have been interested in dance from a young age. I have worked with dance masters such as Thangappan and Hiralal as their assistant. One day I got an opportunity to choreograph for the Telugu film Alludu Ochadu. After this, there was no looking back. In Tamil, my first film was Vandikaran Magan of Poompuhar Productions. When I was working with Thangappan master, actor Kamal Haasan joined us. When he became a big star, I worked for his films Natchathiram and Kaithiyin Dairy.

How it felt

When I saw my name on the screen, I felt I had achieved what I wanted. It was thrilling. The turning point came in the form of the Chiranjeevi-Vijaya Shanthi starrer Pasivadi Pranam in Telugu. This was the first film which introduced break dance. Following its success, I got more offers to work in Telugu cinema. I have worked with Gangai Amaren, Bharathirajaa, Sivaji Productions and other good companies.

How life changed

It didn’t change much except for material acquisitions. I’ve been in the field for more than 30 years and have 3,000 films to my credit. I have done films in all the South Indian languages as well as in Hindi and Oriya. Films like Kusi and Vaali figure among the best I’ve done. My only regret is I live in Chennai and work more in other language films. I hope I will get more films in Tamil.
