How relevant is the joint family concept today? Can individuals survive without relationships? Even bosom pals turn enemies when money is at stake. Radaan TV’s ‘Chellamae,’ to go on air from September 14, looks at these issues with Radhika Sarathkumar leading the cast in the role of homely Chellamma.

Sharing screen space with her will be Delhi Ganesh, Radha Ravi, Vasu Vikram, Rajkamal, Mohini, Subashini, Sonia and Latha Rao. Temple towns such as Swami Malai, Kumbakonam and Tiruvidaimarudur form the backdrop for this serial directed by Jawahar.

Ponkumaran has written the story, screenplay and dialogue. Dhina has taken care of the music.

Russian film: Ballad of a Soldier
(Makkal TV, Sunday, 2 p.m.)

‘Ballad of a Soldier’, a 1960 film directed by Grigori Chukhrai, is set during World War II and shows a Red Army soldier Alyosha’s journey back home during leave. He meets several civilians on his way and falls in love with Shura.

The film, produced at Mosfilm, won several awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay.

Kural Pesum Kural
(Makkal TV, Sundays, 8.30 p.m.)

To commemorate its fourth year, Makkal TV is launching a new reality show on September 6.

‘Kural Pesum kural’ tests the oratory skills of students, based on the Tirukkural. The preliminary rounds were conducted in Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Salem and Puducherry. The semi and final rounds will be shot in Chennai on lavish sets. The show is jointly presented by Makkal TV and Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam.

Naaga Mangai
(Zee Tamil, Monday-Thursday, 5.05 p.m.)

The story revolves around an ichadhari snake that assumes a human form to avenge her parents’ death. The parents, the king and queen of Naag community, are killed for the precious nagamanickam. Before breathing her last, the queen tells her daughter to take revenge on the killers and restore the precious stone to their community.

Thus begins the saga of this snake-woman, who lives life like a normal girl, marries into the family of those who destroyed her family and plots her revenge.

Ladies Special
(Jaya TV, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12 noon)

As the title suggests, this new show is aimed at women and their needs, be they medical or fashion or beauty tips. Gynaecologist Dr. Chitra Sundararajan throws light on issues pertaining to women’s health, while beautician Selvi provides tips on grooming and designer Meena talks about the latest fashion trends.

Rasigan Pattalam
(Jaya TV, Saturdays, 6 p.m.)

The 90-minute show features fans of film stars of Tamil cinema. Each week, the rasigar mandrams will share their views about their favourite actor and express what they expect from him/her. The show is presented by Hemapriya.

Good Morning Tamizha
(Jaya TV, All days, 6.45 a.m.)

Jaya TV unveils a new two-hour breakfast show which has a variety of segments to cater for different needs. It begins with a comprehensive fitness and wellness programme.

‘Arogyathai Thedi’ discusses the positive and negative aspects of the food that we eat. ‘Prapancha Rahasyam’ highlights the astrological effects for the day for the 12 rasis. ‘Ulagai Velvom’ is a motivational programme designed to provide succour to those who feel overwhelmed by events confronting them and supplement them with tips to face the rigours of the day. ‘Cinema Paradiso’ reviews internationally renowned movies. ‘Aadityan Kitchen’ introduces simple recipes. ‘Employment.Com’ offers tips on job vacancies advertised the same day and highlights job profiles, candidate profiles, earning potential and other related details. ‘Studio Pakkam’ is a digest of events in Tamil cinema. ‘Tamil Nadu Today’, the concluding part, lists the happenings in the city as well as art, culture and entertainment news.

Super Singer Junior – 2
(Vijay TV, Monday-Thursday, 9 p.m.)

It’s ‘Kanthasamy’ special as juniors short-listed from Kovai, Tiruchi and Chennai sang hit numbers from the latest Vikram film. What’s more, ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram visited the sets and interacted with the participants. The children sang ‘Excuse me Mr. Kanthasamy’, ‘Meow Meow Poonai’, ‘Mambo Maamiya’ and ‘Alegra’ and there were soon joined by Vikram. They were dressed in black to resemble the rooster character in the film.

Paatu Paadava
(Vijay TV, Friday & Saturday, 10 p.m.)

The special guest this week is ‘Munthinam Parthenae’ fame Prashanthini. With the three lifelines, will Prashanthini complete the eight levels and take home the Rs. 5 lakh prize money? The host is playback singer Anuradha Sriram.
