Chasing success

Wondering what happened to the gorgeous Udita Goswami? She’s back with four quick releases this year

Ask Udita Goswami about her sudden disappearance from Bollywood, and she retorts she has been busy with other things. “I was doing up my house in Mumbai. I bought a house in Goa and just recently bought a farmhouse on the outskirts of Mumbai in Kalote, where Pooja Bhatt lives. She helped me buy it. I don’t fancy high-end cars but properties. I don’t even intend selling them,” she says. So while there has been no work to show in the last three years, she has managed to acquire many homes. “I also felt the need to train at a method acting class. I realised that all my previous films were only about my look. I no longer want to be another part of a successful film, I want to be the success in that film,” she emphasises.

Forthcoming releases

Armed with this and past experience, the sexy actor says she is wiser now and back in the reckoning. The girl from Garhwal is awaiting four quick releases this year. Up first is Zee Motion Pictures’ Dipak Tijori-directed Fox, a thriller starring Arjun Ramphal, Sunny Deol and her. “It should release after the multiplex owners-producers imbroglio is sorted out. It’s a good role and a totally glamorous one. I am the only glam quotient in the film,” she says, obviously alluding to the other female cast, Sagarika Ghatge of Chak De! India fame. Udita plays the owner of a publishing house in Fox and apparently she managed to impress Sunny so well that he decided to cast her in a special appearance in his banner’s self-directed The Man starring himself and Shilpa Shetty. “I play a spy and have been given an ultra-stylish look with a Mohawk, specs, trousers and boots. I am very excited about it,” she adds.

Udita also bagged a film last year with Akshay Kumar called Helloo India, a project that was delayed for four years. “It had earlier been shot with Namrata (Shirodkar) but got shelved then. I was roped in last year and we have even finished our first schedule together in Bangkok,” she says, of the film directed by debutant Amit Kapoor, son of producer Shabnam Kapoor. Udita plays a U.K. journalist in the film. “I am very happy to work with bigger stars now for they are the ones making a difference to the films,” she adds, candidly.

Her next film Chase with Maverick Productions is being directed by Jagmohan Mundhra of Provoked fame and stars Anuj Saxena with her. “This is a totally de-glam role. I play a nurse and because Jagmohan is at the helm, I am expecting a lot from this movie,” says Udita.

For a girl who won the most sensational debut award for the Pooja Bhatt-directed Paap, Udita doesn’t seem to have cashed in on her popularity. “In hindsight, everything you did five years back looks kiddish. But I didn’t make drastic mistakes, even though I don’t have a godfather or a personal friend in the industry,” she says. Is she speaking about her affair with her Zeher-director Mohit Suri which at one point took precedence over news of her films? “I don’t think the relationship harmed me in any way. I had told Mohit in the very beginning that we would never work together. I had too much pride in me. If anyone was to ever say that I am a director’s actress or that I get work thanks to him I would never take it. But you don’t get involved with a person by thinking so much,” she explains.

Busy writing

Udita is now busy writing her first story which she wants to direct. “It’s the nicest love story and I want someone young to write out the screenplay. I will approach some good production houses to direct it,” she says.
