Vimta sets up lab in Chennai

CHENNAI JUNE 26. The Hyderabad-based Vimta Labs, which is in the contract research and testing business, has opened its first regional laboratory in Chennai in collaboration with The Voluntary Health Services. Vimta VHS Research Centre will cover high growth areas such as clinical reference laboratory services and bioequivalence studies.

The clinical reference laboratory services would cater to VHS patients and also other patient samples in the Chennai region. It will also assist the in-house requirements of bioequivalence study samples.

Addressing a press conference here today, S. P. Vasireddi, Chairman and Managing Director, Vimta Labs, said Vimta VHS Research Centre was being set up with a 50-bed clinical pharmacology unit, of which 26 beds would be operational in the Phase I.

This would cater to the demand of growing generic drugs market. Vimta would soon open 10 patient service centres across the city. It would cater to public and hospitals for testing the sample.

Vimta Labs was planning to invest nearly Rs. 8 crores in its business expansion during the current year. It had already decided to set up a Rs. 4 crore exclusive laboratory at the Ticel Biopark in Chennai to address the quality testing requirements of Biotech companies. Vimta was also setting up two more centres in Andhra Pradesh — Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

Mr. Vasireddi said Vimta recorded a turnover of Rs. 19.79 crores for 2002-03.
