Planters welcome sops

COIMBATORE: The Planters Association of Tamil Nadu (PAT) has welcomed the package of concessions announced by the Central Government for the plantation sector as `very timely'. In a release, C. Sankaranarayanan, its Advisor, said however the avenues of `cost reduction' were still the `major relief' sought by the plantation industry. While the promised reduction of the PLR to 5-6 per cent would be a major breakthrough, "the industry is again looking forward to the Government for extending a subsidy for exports as well as for reimbursement of the social sector cost incurred by the plantations towards the welfare amenities provided to the workers under the Plantation Labour Act". He urged the State Government to extend immediate benefit by lowering ST to 4 per cent and CST to 2 per cent by reducing electricity charge of tea factories levied at HT rates.
