`M800' prices slashed

NEW DELHI: It is an open price war in the passenger car market. Close on the heels of Hyundai slashing the prices of its `Santro' models by around Rs. 19,000, Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) on Monday dropped the prices of its `once most popular' standard 800 model (M800) by over Rs. 16,000 to stem the fall in sales.

As a consequence, the price of the basic M800 version now stands at below Rs. 2 lakh once again. While the price of M800 (non-AC version) stands slashed by Rs. 16,286 to Rs. 1.99 lakh, the AC version will cost Rs. 16,000 lower at Rs. 2.22 lakh as compared to Rs. 2.38 lakh previously.

Maruti Udyog, which initially led the entry-level market with its M800, has witnessed a marked decline in sales of this model in recent times in view of the customer preference for a higher-end entry level car. It saw a 30 per cent fall in sales of M800 at 1.16 lakh cars in 2004-05 as compared to 1.68 lakh cars sold in the previous fiscal.
