Equities make further headway

MUMBAI JUNE 26. Led by cement stocks, equities made further headway, pushing the Sensex up by 35 points at close on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday on sustained buying support by operators as well as fresh purchases from foreign institutional investors. Discounting a moderate setback in New York stocks last night, IT stocks rallied smartly on fairly heavy purchases by speculators at the prevailing market price.

However, select counters that rallied smartly during morning trading, later reacted negatively due to squaring up by operators due to last day of account in futures and options, brokers said.

The BSE 30-share index opened firm at 3528.28 and later surged to the intra-day high at 3564.68 before ending at 3552.40 against the previous close of 3517.27, netting a rise of 35.13 points or one per cent. The broadbased BSE-100 index edged up by 5.45 points to 1794.89. — PTI
