Maruti bets big on used car business

NEW DELHI: With the used car business growing faster compared to the sales of new cars, Maruti Suzuki India has taken a unique initiative allowing its customers to buy or sell an old Maruti vehicle by just visiting the upgraded website of its TrueValue used car business. The auto major will also help Maruti owners to dispose of their old cars that are no longer roadworthy, provided they purchase Maruti cars.

“We have already launched our improved website that provides all information to a potential buyer or seller of a used car. A customer can now shop for a used car from his home. Renowned marketing guru Philip Kotler has termed our website as highly informative,” said Maruti Suzuki Chief General Manger (Sales Support) Ravi Bhatia, who also heads Maruti’s TrueValue business.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Bhatia said a person could just go to the TrueValue website and select a used car as per his requirements as all details and pictures of products were available there. “He no longer needs to go from one dealer to another searching a used car. He can just ask us to bring a particular used car to his doorsteps. Similarly, a person can calculate the tentative value of his old car and get its preliminary evaluation done at the website itself,” he added.

Stating that Maruti Suzuki was banking big on its TrueValue business that was established in 2001, Mr. Bhatia said last year they sold over one lakh used cars, where 90 per cent were Maruti car owners. “The TrueValue business that is growing at over 20 per cent per year helps us in retaining our old customers. It is also an important business proposition as one out of two cars sold today is a used car,” he added.

Maruti TrueValue is the largest organised player in the used car market with more than 6,000 pre-owned cars in stock at any point of time. Out of 430-odd dealers/outlets across India, over 300 already have TrueValue capabilities that provide sourcing, certification and selling of used cars. “We are looking at covering all our dealers for this business and deploying trained staff,” Mr., Bhatia added.
