LG launches high-end mobile handset

The new model, priced at Rs. 21,900, comes with five mega pixel camera

NEW DELHI: LG Electronics on Monday launched hi-end ‘Viewty’ mobile handset that comes with professional-level camera and many easy-to-use features. The company also announced its plans to launch around 20 new handsets in 2008 to further consolidate its position in the Indian mobile handset market. Priced at Rs. 21,900, the new model (LG-KU990) comes with hi-tech 5 mega pixel camera phone with 3-inch full LCD touch screen and a Xenon flash. When taking photos in poor light or shaking moment, it uses ISO800 and SmartLight technology besides one-touch ‘Image Stabilizer’ for bright and clear pictures.

The new handset also brings another world’s first on a mobile with the 120fps video recording function, while its full screen enables users to enjoy high quality DivX video files in the widescreen format. The 3G-enabled handset is preloaded with Google Maps among other applications. A major provider of CDMA mobile phones, LG is planning to now focus on the GSM market as well.

“We want to consolidate our position in the Indian market and are targeting 8-10 per cent market share in a couple of years,” said company’s Director (Sales and Marketing) V. Ramachandran at a press conference here.

“We plan to launch around 20 more new handsets in the GSM segment where we have nine models. We want to be among the top three mobile handset vendors by next year. We will also focus on offering premium mobile phones in the GSM space,” Mr. Ramachandran added. LG now enjoys only 1.7 per cent market share in the Indian GSM mobile handset market, occupying the fourth slot.

Nokia is at the top followed by Motorola and Samsung.
