Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami seeking a meeting to clear “misconceptions” about the Mekedatu project. The day also saw the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passing a resolution opposing the permission granted to Karnataka to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).

The Tamil Nadu Assembly urged the Centre to order the Central Water Commission to withdraw the permission given to Karnataka. In a special session on Thursday evening, Mr. Palaniswami proposed the resolution, which was strongly supported by all political parties.

In Karnataka, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy called a meeting of former CMs and Water Resources Ministers to discuss all pending projects, including Mekedatu. Mr. Shivakumar said at the meeting that Karnataka was in favour of an “amicable solution” to the Mekedatu issue, adding that there was no substance in Tamil Nadu’s fears that the project may be misused for irrigation purposes as there was no private land in the project area.
