Stalin arrested

CHENNAI April 9. The city police arrested the former Chennai Mayor and DMK MLA, M. K. Stalin, from his Velachery residence late tonight, even as hundreds of party supporters had thronged there on hearing about his imminent arrest and raised slogans against the AIADMK Government and the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa.

The names of five DMK MLAs figure in an FIR and they have been charged, along with Mr. Stalin, with inciting violence during his visit to the Queen Mary's College here yesterday. Mr. Stalin, along with the MLAs, including K. Ponmudi, S. A. M. Hussain, J. Anbazhagan, visited the QMC to extend support to the students agitating against a proposal to demolish the institution. Till late tonight, the police claimed that they were denied entry into the residence, while Mr. Stalin said he was informed that he had been arrested. About 20 minutes past midnight, Mr. Stalin got into a vehicle and was taken to be remanded. Mr. Stalin said he or his party could not be intimidated by the arrest. ``One more case has been registered against me and our MLAs. We have seen so many cases registered against our leaders in this regime. But we will not be cowed down by these bogus cases,'' he told The Hindu moments before he was whisked away.

Challenging the Government to come up with credible proof of any of the charges against him, Mr. Stalin said the new case was filed because the AIADMK could find nothing in any of the cases filed earlier. ``I have seen jail since the Emergency days. This is nothing new to me.'' Earlier, a case under various IPC sections was registered against Mr. Stalin, who had reportedly broken a police barricade and entered the QMC.
