SC orders status quo on cockfights

SC orders status quo

Ordering status quo, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Hyderabad High Court to hear afresh a petition challenging a State government’s ban on cockfights in connection with Sankranti festival.

This means there would be no cockfights in the State until the HC decides on the petition in the light of relevant provisions of Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Act which bans animal fighting of any kind and the Supreme Court judgment of 2014.

A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu passed the order.
