Samata, JD(U) to merge

NEW DELHI OCT. 28. On the eve of the Assembly elections in five States, the Janata Dal (United) and the Samata Party today decided to merge into a single party within the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. The details will be announced on Thursday.

The JD (U) president, Sharad Yadav and the Samata Party chief, George Fernandes, announced this here in the presence of the Samata Party leader and Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar.

The merger will take their joint strength in the Lok Sabha to 18 MPs. Talks are on with other erstwhile Janata Dal splinter groups to unify before the general elections next year.
