Tungabhadra river, downstream of the dam in Hosapete, was in spate due to heavy discharge of water. Purandara Mantap, one of the monuments in Hampi, has been submerged.
On Thursday, with around 60,000 cusecs inflow, the discharge into the river course was around 63,000 cusecs through 22 of the 33 crest gates which have been opened to a height of two feet.
Owing to heavy rain and heavy discharges from the upstream dams, the authorities are anticipating heavy inflow into the dam and the present discharge of 63,000 cusecs into the river may further be increased up to 1.5 lakh cusecs. The authorities have sounded an alert along the river.
As usual, the Purandara Mantap and another stone mantap near the bathing ghat, where last rites are performed, have been submerged. The two mantaps are almost inside the river. People coming to Hampi to perform last rites have been cautioned not to venture into the river.
